Minerals Technologies' Mayger Wins California Safety Award

September 23, 2008

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 2008--Doug Mayger, general manager-Carbonates West, Specialty Minerals Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Minerals Technologies Inc. (NYSE: MTX), received the first annual California Construction and Industrial Minerals Association (CalCIMA) Safety Award in the industrial minerals category on September 18.

Mike Herges, chairman of the CalCIMA Safety and Health subcommittee, presented the award at the CalCIMA annual conference in Rancho Mirage, California. Mr. Herges commended Mr. Mayger's plant in achieving one million hours without a lost-time accident through programs that involved both the employees and their families.

The award specifically recognizes leaders and their influence on the safety programs for their plant or regions. The award is public recognition of the safety achievements at Mineral Technologies' Lucerne Valley, California, plant, which recorded more than one million hours--over four years--without a lost time injury. Mayger served as manager of the Lucerne Valley plant for the majority of that period.

"This award exemplifies the work Doug Mayger and his team have done to improve safety and safety awareness at our ground calcium carbonate operation in Lucerne Valley," said Joseph C. Muscari, chairman and chief executive officer. "His leadership in this effort has helped provide a safer working environment for our more than 120 employees there and serves as a great example for the rest of our company of what is possible."
